Plan Before Building Your Website
April 6, 2010 in Small Business Insight, Small Business Services, Small Business Technology Tags: building a website, planning, things to consider, web building, website
A website is one of the best ways a small business can reach a worldwide audience. I speak with many small business owners and I estimate; a third don’t realize the importance of having a website, a third know they should have a website but are unsure about their ability to set-up and maintain a website and a third understand the importance of a website and jump in head first!
I admire the spirit of the ‘jump-right-in’ type and they are usually the go-getters, but the ‘jump-right-in’ type can also waste time and money because they didn’t plan properly. Planning is the key to creating a website that is appropriate for it’s audience, user-friendly, technically sound, and search engine optimized.
Things to consider when decided to create a website for your small business:
- * What domain name will I use? What hosting company will I use?
Ideally, you want a domain name that represents your business and is memorable. It doesn’t hurt if you can get one of your keywords in there too. You can search available names to see if your desired name is available. If you can, .com is still the best, but .org, .net are cool too; .biz, .tv, etc. are not as popular. Not quit as important as the domain name, at this point, you should start comparing hosting companies. The biggest thing you want to look for is tech support ratings, hosting plan flexibility and price. If you can decide on a hosting company now , you may even get free domain registration! I often advise people to use the same company to register the domain name and host the site, just makes things easier.
- * What is the purpose of the website?
Seems basic, but asking yourself this question will help put you in the right frame of mind to approach building your website. Are you planning to sell anything from your website? Is your website purely informational? Will your website have community features (forums, chat, or subscription)? Will may website scroll or all fit on one ‘page’?
Determining the purpose of your website will make it easier to design an appropriate ‘look’, determine the underlying code and serve as a guide post as you build.
- * How do I want MY website to look?
Once you have determined your purpose, view other websites that are related to your website’s planned purpose and in the same, or similar industry… then be creative!
Be Sure:
- your color choices are easy on the eyes! Certain colors, placed together, can make your text difficult to read. The best example is royal blue text over a red background… the human eye has trouble focusing when reading. You may see this used for effect but you want to avoid it in most cases.
- your website is not too cluttered! People tend to like some kind of order. Just think, if you entered a retail store and the store had stuff everywhere. It would be difficult to find what your looking for and you probably would not be there long. With your website, it is the same concept. Make your website something that is easy on the eye and pleasant to look at and your viewers may stay longer.
- your images are carefully chosen! The same promotional pictures you’ve have from “that print ad you did two years ago”, may not cut it. Take in to account the overall color scheme of your website when choosing images to avoid and eye-straining contrasts. Think of image size and placement within your website. Will different pages have different pictures? Which pictures will be on all the website pages? Images can add huge appeal to a website, but moderation is key. Too many images can give your page a cluttered look.
- Remember “User-friendly”! Your website should have clearly defined navigation for every page. Avoid having broken links anywhere on your website, but especially in your navigation. Don’t ever send your viewers to dead-end pages (pages with no exit navigation). A few broken links click and usually, just one dead-end page and your visitor is gone! Think of your website like a newspaper. Put the most important information in ‘prime’ spots. If the home page of your website scrolls, you want your most important information above the ‘fold’, meaning the visitor can view the information with out scrolling down.
- * What is the main theme of my website (information, what is the website about)?
Stay focused on your theme!
Keywords are a large part of optimizing your website for search engines. You should have a core set of keywords that are related to your websites’ theme. If you sell cameras, some of your keywords could be ‘pictures’,'memories’,'film’,'photography’ and of course ‘camera’. These words would be reoccurring throughout your entire website. Search Engine Optimization is a world unto itself, but if your start thinking in this manner during the planning stage, when you get with a web designer or actually start building your website, you will be a few steps ahead.
- * What content (text) will be on each page?
Content is king! What do you want to say to your viewers? Each page should have some unique content. You, as the small business owner (or project manager), must provide this information. Too many times, people come to have a website designed and expect the designer to explain and create content about their company! This rarely works well, because who can explain a business better than a person that is part of the business. This can be a major time (money) killer because of the number revisions and edits you will ultimately require to get it to say what you want. Save yourself some frustration, create your own content.
Your content will help you decide on the number of pages that will comprise your website. Basic business websites usually have a “Homepage” (first page you see when your site is accessed), an “About” page, a “Product / Services” page and a “Contact” page. You need to think about the text or content that will be needed for these pages, at the very minimum. Keep in mind that “Products / Services” could end up being multiple pages.
Control your content…. it is the most important thing on your website!
- * Can my website function as designed?
This is the step that you may consult with a professional if you have limited web-building knowledge. You can visit other sites to see if other websites have the feature or similar features to the one you want, if they do then you know ‘it’ can be done. Whether or not it can be done with your budget, hosting plan, or time frame, is something you consult with your designer.
The main thing is to think about what you want this website to represent and how you want your company to be perceived. An ill-prepared website can cost you sales, return visits and ultimately cost you money. Plan first, ask questions and do your own research. Consult with a professional when things go beyond your knowledge. This is your business, be sure it is represented properly.

Because they didn’t finish reading the ebook they missed the part about how to use keywords or WordPress tags properly. This is a big deal because keywords or WordPress tags are used when indexing your articles with search engines. So if you want to get your article indexed by the search engines then you need to use the proper keywords or WordPress tags.

webpage advertising is actually practically all about the number of other url pages connecting to your site. without those same oneway links you’re somewhat screwed. I realized this soon after subscribing to what is i think the best semi-automatic weblink building program you can get … website seo

The simple rule of online business is to be visible. The websites of the businesses which don’t have the visitors will sink like Titanic. There are various online marketing tools which help these sites have a visibility, web directoryis only the one of thousands, submit your urls to as many other websites as possible is the way to move up in ranks.

Cool! Very thorough Now I have a better understanding about computer networking and truly appreciates the detailed explanation. But it is of your advantage if you are into free proxies because it make the connection faster. You can go over the internet for some info about these servers. Most especially if you wish not to reveal your basic information. Or better yet opt for pocket friendly proxies because it does not require you to pay anything. As you surf, take into consideration that you are in the safe hand.. I think computer networking can be your easy access to the world as it provides you lots of information regarding about everything you wish to know. public proxy server

The easiest way to build traffic to your website is through backlinks. It is the most amazing way to drive traffic to your site. Its value is truly immeasurable if website traffic is concern. High quality backlinks is a plus. Although backlinks have many types but I prefer one way backlinks. Although there are a lot of ways and means for web traffic, but my first choice is through backlinks because in this way you can easily build traffic to your site and the more traffic, the more bundles of cash you will receive..20 edu backlinks

Your WordPress blog keeps getting better and better!
I’ve been following your posts for a couple of weeks now and I gotta say that your older posts don’t offer as much insight as the newer ones. You have a lot more ideas and originality now, your writing is constantly improving.
Keep it up! BTW, if you’re looking into placing some ads on your blog – you should really do it. Don’t go for all that 3rd party crap – Use a nice WordPress monetization tool coded by a friend of mine which by far the best, it’s a must have plugin for any serious blogger.
The BEST ad manager for WordPress. You can find it at Thaidy.com/BestWordPressPlugin and give it a free test-run.
Oh, and there is a huge discount coupon in the sidebar of the mainpage!

Hey – nice blog, just looking around some blogs, seems a pretty nice platform you are using. I’m currently using WordPress for a few of my sites but looking to change one of them over to a platform similar to yours as a trial run. Anything in particular you would recommend about it?
May 28th, 2010 at 8:37 pm
Hi. this is kind of an “unconventional” question , but have other visitors asked you how get the menu bar to look like you’ve got it? I also have a blog and am really looking to alter around the theme, however am scared to death to mess with it for fear of the search engines punishing me. I am very new to all of this …so i am just not positive exactly how to try to to it all yet. I’ll just keep working on it one day at a time.

There are two important factors you need to judge for choosing the best online website builder. First, know what you want and the second is what a web builder can offer. This should always be in consideration for comparing the best website builder services. BTW, great content!

If you are building a website that is going to need a lot of content I would recommend using a good CMS (content management system) like Joomla, Drupal or even WordPress. It will save you a lot of time and money.

I’m sure we’ve visited websites where you have to scroll horizontally. This is an absolute no-no in modern web design. A good designer will develop websites that fit on most screen sizes. The current optimized layout for websites currently is 1024 x 768 pixels.
